Acupuncture
Acupuncture has been part of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for thousands of years. It involves inserting fine needles into specific points on the skin or applying various other techniques to the acupuncture points to restore balance and encourage the body to heal itself.
Needle insertion creates a micro-trauma in the surrounding tissue initiating an inflammatory process. As a result, fresh blood and nutrients flood the site. A substance called prostaglandin regulates inflammation and mobilises platelets for healing. This effect may also heal any surrounding tissue damage leftover from past injuries. Pre-sterilised disposable needles are used. Depending on the location of the treatment, you will either sit or lie down. Acupuncture is painless because the needles are very fine. However, when the needles are inserted, you may feel mild tingling around the site, warmth or heaviness, or even nothing at all. |
An acupuncturist may use other techniques, including:
After an acupuncture session, you will typically feel relaxed and refreshed, but specific responses depend on each person. For instance, some people feel energised, while others feel sleepy. Occasionally, the symptoms get a little worse before they improve.
The number of treatments you need depends on your condition. In most cases, people experience a reduction in symptoms within a few sessions. The idea of acupuncture is to restore the natural balance of energy inside your body. Once the balance is restored, the body can take care of itself, and no further treatments are necessary.
- Cupping – suction designed to bring blood to the acupuncture point
- TCM Remedial Massage – techniques applied to specific acupuncture points or meridians

CuppingCupping is a therapy in which plastic cups (in my clinic) are applied to the skin along the body's meridians, creating suction and believed to stimulate the flow of energy. Cupping is a type of alternative therapy that originated in China. The suction may facilitate healing with blood flow.
Cupping therapy is a suitable method of reducing muscle tension, increasing blood flow, and restoring movement throughout the body. Suction cups are used to create a vacuum effect. The cupping draws underlying tissues into the cup to increase circulation and promote natural healing. Tightness and pain can be significantly reduced by cupping, releasing the fascia and relaxing muscles. Cupping is combined with techniques, such as dry needling and remedial massage, to assist in natural pain management and injury rehabilitation. |
